Playing Catch Up

November 5, 2009

While I was in San Diego last week, I had a chance to catch up on shows that I had put onto my iPod.  I finished off season 3 of “Dexter”, which was another terrific season.  “Dexter” manages to be suspenseful, surprising, funny and even occasionally touching, all in the same episode.  I still can’t believe how much I love a show about a serial killer.  I also began watching season 4 of “Weeds”, which might be getting a bit too dark for my tastes.  I’ll finish the season off, but I don’t find myself laughing all that often anymore, so that might be it for me.

While catching up on some of these favorite shows of mine, my Read the rest of this entry »

Updated TV Show List

October 7, 2009

Two weeks into the new television season, I thought it was time to finally update the list of television shows that I’m recording.  (I’m including shows in my Hulu queue as being recorded.)  It’s a fairly long list at this point, so I’m sure it will get whittled down at some point.  Survival of the fittest.  I listed them, but at this point, I have yet to watch any episodes this season of “Lie to Me” or “The New Adventures of Old Christine”.  I am forcing myself to watch at least one episode of shows I’m interested in before I toss them aside, like I did with “The Mentalist”.  I watched one episode.  I think that’s enough.  “The Good Wife” may suffer the same fate soon.  I also just watched “Castle” for the first time and Read the rest of this entry »

Premiere Week

September 29, 2009

I’ve been sampling the fall television season like a buffet, a little here, a little there, until I decide what I really like.  I’m not limiting myself just to new shows this season.  I’ve also watched some older shows for the first time, like “The Mentalist”.  Here are some quick thoughts after premiere week.

“FlashForward” was the new show I was looking forward to the most.  It didn’t blow me away, but some of that is probably because I already knew a lot about what was going to happen in the first episode.  Except I didn’t know what was going to happen at the end of the episode, which is definitely intriguing.  I’m definitely in for now.  Hopefully, the writers know where they’re taking the story.

“Modern Family” is Read the rest of this entry »

Improved Emmy Show

September 23, 2009

Perhaps it couldn’t have been worse than last year’s show, with the different reality show hosts teaming up to host the Emmy Awards.  That was a dreadful opener last year.  This year, I thought Neal Patrick Harris did a fine job hosting the Emmys, helping to make this year’s show fairly entertaining.  As I probably mentioned last year, watching the show after it’s taped is definitely the way to go, allowing me to skip those categories I don’t care about.  I liked how they grouped all the awards in categories this year.  It made the show feel more organized (and allowed me to skip the movie/miniseries awards quite easily.)  I heard about the two winning shows, but Read the rest of this entry »

Not Much Promise

September 11, 2009

My favorite issue of “Entertainment Weekly” just arrived in the mail today, the Fall TV Preview issue.  Each year, I excitedly read about all my favorite returning shows and also about highly anticipated new shows.  Then I map out exactly what I’m recording on each night, carefully planning out a TiVo Season Pass strategy.  This year, however, I’m just not as excited as I usually am.  As I’m thinking about some of my favorite returning shows, “Lost”, “Friday Night Lights” and “Chuck” won’t even start airing until next year.  I love “Glee”, a new show, but other than that, I can’t think of many new shows Read the rest of this entry »
