At the Movies, Finally

October 20, 2009

As I get older, it becomes harder to be the youngest person in the room.  Patti and I managed this last Sunday, however.  How?  We went to see “Julie and Julia”.  There’s nothing like Meryl Streep to bring out the senior citizens, I guess.  The movie I really wanted to see was the Harry Potter one, but unfortunately, it was no longer playing in any theaters.  (What happened to discount theaters?)  I’ve been wanting to see the Harry Potter movie since the day it came out, but every weekend, something came up.  Sometimes I had to work, sometimes Patti had to work.  Other times Colin had a birthday party to attend.  And I’ll admit, on some Sundays I Read the rest of this entry »

Rooting for Slumdog

February 23, 2009

I watched a lot less of the Oscars than I normally do, since I was having dinner and driving home from my parents during the telecast.  Essentially, I only watched the beginning and the end, though I do have the show recorded, so I might go back and review the highlights.  At first, I was a little skeptical of Hugh Jackman (who I always think of as Wolverine) and his song-and-dance number, but I grew to like it more and more as it went on.  He’s a pretty good performer.  It’s always more fun to watch the Oscars with a movie to root for, and since I only saw one of the Best Picture nominees, my choice was obvious.  I was rooting for Read the rest of this entry »

Torino, Slumdog

January 23, 2009

It’s nice that going out to see a movie is an option for us again. With my helpful parents always willing to watch the kids for a bit, we’ve seen two good films over the past few weeks, “Gran Torino” and “Slumdog Millionaire”. I would say that “Gran Torino” was good and “Slumdog Millionaire” was really good. Clint Eastwood films always have a certain straightforward style that I enjoy, and that was the case in this film as well. I’ve liked a lot of his films, whether he’s been the actor, director, or both. My favorites are “Unforgiven”, “In the Line of Fire”, “Mystic River” and “Letters from Iwo Jima”. The only movie I remember seeing that I don’t like is Read the rest of this entry »

Tanforan Theater

September 1, 2008

The end of a three-day weekend is always so sad. I always remember back to Friday night, when the entire weekend was still in front of me, and how much hope and promise I felt for the days ahead. Now, those days are gone and there’s just another work week to look forward to, though a slightly shortened one at that. At least I got to do one of the things I had hoped to do more of after moving to the Bay Area. Patti and I dropped the kids off with my parents in SSF and headed to the new Tanforan movie theater. At least I think it’s new, since Read the rest of this entry »

A Rare Trip to the Movies

June 30, 2008

This past Saturday, Patti and I had a rare opportunity to go out and see a movie, as we dropped off the boys at a special Saturday afternoon/evening session of preschool called Parents’ Night Out. (Owen doesn’t attend the preschool, but Colin was able to get him in for this one evening.) Since these movie opportunities are so rare, choosing a movie is done very carefully. (I’m still kicking myself for wasting an opportunity on Atonement recently.) For this particular night, two movies were in contention. The first was Sex and the City, the movie that I had been dying to watch for a long while. Waiting for a long while, however, can dissipate some of the anticipation. I was very excited about seeing Sex and the City when it premiered, but Read the rest of this entry »
