Conference Championship Game

19 Jan

It has been 14 years since the last time the 49ers played in a conference championship game.  I was convinced the 49ers would win that game, even though they had been eliminated from the playoffs by the same opponent, the Packers, in the two previous years.  The game was played in San Francisco and I really thought Super Bowl number six was at hand.  I remember I was taking a ski trip that weekend and I convinced everyone to return on Saturday instead of Sunday so I could watch the game.  Well, the 49ers were never really in the game and lost once again to Favre and the Packers.  Favre was on top of his game back then.

I was still a young man back then.  Now, 14 years later, married and a father of two, do I still enjoy 49er playoff games as much as I used to?  The answer is a resounding yes, no doubt helped by the many lean years that preceded this season.  The game itself is only three hours, but I also really enjoy the anticipation of the game, which lasts an entire week, or possibly two when there is a bye.  I never tire of watching highlights and hearing radio talk about the win over the Saints.  I’m consciously trying to soak in all these good vibes, because I know they can disappear just like that.  Sure, it seems like the franchise is once again on firm footing, but you never know.  I sure didn’t think I would have to wait another 14 years to see the team play for a spot in the Super Bowl again.
