Playing Catch Up

While I was in San Diego last week, I had a chance to catch up on shows that I had put onto my iPod.  I finished off season 3 of “Dexter”, which was another terrific season.  “Dexter” manages to be suspenseful, surprising, funny and even occasionally touching, all in the same episode.  I still can’t believe how much I love a show about a serial killer.  I also began watching season 4 of “Weeds”, which might be getting a bit too dark for my tastes.  I’ll finish the season off, but I don’t find myself laughing all that often anymore, so that might be it for me.

While catching up on some of these favorite shows of mine, my TiVo and Hulu queues (Internet connection in the hotel room was way too slow to watch streaming video) started filling up.  Upon returning from San Diego, I immediately had to give up on “Castle” and “Community”.  I liked what I saw of both new shows, but not enough for me to keep up with them, not with how far behind I am.  Luckily, two new shows have come along, “V” and “White Collar”, so we’ll see if they’re any good.  Next on the cutting block could be two older shows, “Bones” and “Lie to Me”.  I saw the premiere of “Bones” and that’s it so far.  I still plan on watching the premiere of “Lie to Me”, but these shows are procedurals and I have a tendency to give up on them sooner or later.  I’m also still underwhelmed by “FlashForward”, but I’m going to try and stick with it a while longer, in the hope that it pays off later.  Sometimes, a show needs some time to set things up for grander things later.  I’m still willing to give “FlashForward” some extra time for now.

This Sunday, my absolute favorite show, by a wide margin, “Mad Men” has its season 3 finale.  I’ve loved this third season just as much as the first two.  I will miss my weekly “Mad Men” fix dearly.  After that’s off the air, I’m not sure what my favorite airing television show will be.  Maybe “Glee”?  I do look forward to watching that show a lot, and I’m very tempted to purchase its soundtrack.  Who knew, that I’d love a musical that much?  I’ve surprised myself.  It’s a great show, and one that couldn’t be more different in content and tone than “Mad Men”.  There’s all different kinds of great television.
