Off to San Diego

Anywhere in the world, I asked him.  Colin has the week off from school next week and I asked him where he wanted to visit.  The answer, not surprisingly, was San Diego.  Legoland remains his favorite destination.  When we were living in Los Angeles, I was all for it.  Now Legoland is quite a drive away.  I tried to convince Colin to visit Disneyland instead, which would shave two hours off the drive.  Plus, I really like Disneyland.  Everything there is so clean and organized.  And, not that a high bar is set, but I think they have the tastiest food for a theme park.  But no, Colin insisted on Legoland, and since this is his week, this is where we are headed tomorrow.  We’ll also be making a stop at SeaWorld, which Colin visited with Patti for the first time in April and he loves it there, too, now.  The last time I visited SeaWorld was probably about ten years ago, so I’m looking forward to the visit myself.  So, tomorrow is the long drive down.  I initially suggested flying, but Colin was adamant about driving, and I didn’t put up much of a fight.  Any time I can avoid an airport, I’m for it.  This also gives us flexibility on a return date, in case we get tired and want to come home early.  The reason Colin doesn’t mind the long drive, however, is he thinks of all those hours as video hours.  He would be singing a pretty different tune if we didn’t have our portable DVD player.  Fortunately for him, we do, and armed with about 50 DVDs, some we just checked out of the library, Colin is ready for hours and hours of entertainment.  My main goal during all those hours will be simply to stay awake.  If only there were a way to listen to my iPod in the MINI.  (No audio in or cassette deck.)  Once we get there, we have two days of Legoland and two days of SeaWorld planned.  Plus there’s one extra day, which we can use to hit the San Diego Zoo, relax, or head home early.  And yes, this trip is just the two of us, Colin and me.  Patti needs to work next week and I was not about to take two young kids with me on this trip.  Sorry, Owen, maybe next time.  Ah, yes, it can be tough to be the younger one sometimes.  Though I believe, and maybe this is just a rationalization for leaving him behind, Owen will probably have more fun at home, especially since he’ll be staying with his favorite parent.  (That’s the subject of another post.)  I’ll bring him back a t-shirt.

Dan, have a great time on your trip with Colin. When you get back, you should look into getting an FM modulator so you can play your iPod over an unused FM frequency in your car. I hear they get the job done, and frankly, it’s better than listening to dead airwaves in Central Cali.
